Based on the true life story of Daniel Keenan, the film also goes under the title of ‘A Thousand Men and a Baby’. In May 1953 aircraft carrier USS Point Cruz (CVE-199) was deployed at Inchon, after the Korean War. There a baby was found abandoned at the US Army Depot. The child was taken to orphanage where the nuns in charge feared for the baby’s safety if he was left in Korea. John T Hayward who was in charge of the vessel is said to have refused to leave without the child. Hayward put his naval career on the line by bringing the child on board and received orders for the baby to be removed as his presence breached regulations. However the child boosted the men’s morale and continued to stay. With the help of Richard Milhous Nixon’s (President of the United States) staff a visa and passport was obtained by winning a poker game against the South Korean who issued passports. The baby was later adopted by Navy Surgeon Hugh Keenan and named Daniel.
