The Scarlet And The Black
Acting heavyweights Gregory Peck (Roman Holiday), Christopher Plummer (The Sound of Music) and John Gielgud (Brideshead Revisited) head the cast of this stirring, Emmy® Award-winning drama about the remarkable life of Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty who, during World War II, rescued thousands of escaped POWs, downed pilots and Italian Resistance fighters from the Gestapo.
O’Flaherty’s (Peck) activities attracted the attention of the Rome-based SS officer Colonel Herbert Kappler (Plummer), but O’Flaherty’s diplomatic status prevented Kappler from openly arresting him. The only solution for Kappler was to try to assassinate O’Flaherty once he left his safe haven in the Vatican and thus end the extraordinary humanitarian efforts of a man who continually put his own life at risk to save the lives of others.
Gielgud plays Pope Pius XII, and other stars include Raf Vallone, Kenneth Colley, T.P. McKenna and Julian Holloway. Based on the book The Scarlet Pimpernel in the Vatican by J.P. Gallagher.
Directed by Jerry London (The Rockford Files).
